Dental bleaching, is a common procedure in dentistry. There are different methods available, some using carbamide peroxide and some using hydrogen peroxide. Teeth whitening is a frequently requested procedure in cosmetic dentistry today.
Causes of tooth discolouration are drinks such as tea, coffee, wine and colas; certain foods like beetroot and curry; smoking; drugs and trauma. The reasons for tooth whitening vary, but generally, it gives the appearance of being more healthy as well as making one feel good about oneself.
The peroxide oxidizing agent penetrates the porosities in the structure of the enamel and breaks down stains in the dentin. Power bleaching uses light to speed up the process of bleaching in the dental surgery.
Many patients worry about the safety of bleaching. Hundreds of studies have been carried out and it has been proven that there is no loss, or softening of enamel and no damage to the tooth structure. Bleaching can cause a varying degree of sensitivity, however, this is not permanent and should not last for more than 24 hours.
